2008 Junior Golf Report

In the summer of 2008, OGA junior golfers had the opportunity to participate in 40 plus events throughout the state.  Highlights included more than 250 juniors golfers age 8-17 who competedin the 78th Oregon Junior Amateur hosted by Bandon Dunes Resort.  This exceptional large field required the Girls (15-17) and Juniors (Boys 16-17) to play the first three days on Bandon Trails GL, while all other divisions competed on the Bandon Dunes GL layout. In addition to the daily play, competitors were granted unlimited access to the practice range and the newly opened “Short Course”. Needless to say, many new friendships were developed in the evening hours.

Oregon Junior Golf also hosted the prestigious Boys Junior Americas Cup Matches with Oregon's team capturing 3rd place, 3-strokes behind the winning Southern California team.  This event is hosted by the OGA once every 17 years, and this year, this most prestigious event celebrated its 36th anniversary at Royal Oaks Country Club in Vancouver, Wash.  The competition brings together an elite international field of 17 teams of the top four boys representing 12 western states, 2 Canadian Provinces and Mexico competing in a team format. Past participants in some of the greatest names in golf including current PGA, Champions Tour and Nationwide Tour stars such as Fred Couples, Peter Jacobsen, Mark O'Meara, Craig Stadler, Corey Pavin, Phil Mickelson, Jeff Quinney, Jason Allred, Robert Garrigus and Tiger Woods.

Another milestone anniversary occurred with 40th anniversary of the Eddie Hogan Cup Team Matches.  Each August, twelve northwest junior teams, including teams from Hawaii and British Columbia, compete at Riverside Golf and Country Club in the 36-hole stroke play format that commemorates long time Riverside professional Eddie Hogan. This year's 36-hole event featured stiff competition between Oregon’s two teams. Never before in the history of the event have both Oregon teams finished atop the leaderboard, but this year Oregon #1 edged out Oregon #2 by a mere two strokes.

Along with thanking our many parents and volunteers who help us make our program nationally recognized, we would be remiss not to thank our partnering golf courses for their support including Bandon Dunes Resort, Bear Creek GC, Buffalo Peak GC, Charbonneau GC, Centennial GC, Children’s Course, Chinook Winds, Coos CC, Cross Creek GC, Dallas, Diamond Woods GC, Emerald Valley GC, Evergreen GC, Forest Hills CC, Forest Hills GC, Golf Club of Oregon, Grants Pass GC, Illahe Hills CC, Juniper GC, Michelbook CC, McNary GC, Myrtle Creek GC, Oak Hills GC, Ocean Dunes GL, OGA GC, Oswego Lake Municipal, Pendleton CC, Reames G&CC, Running Y Resort, Riverside G&CC, Rogue Valley CC, Rose City GC, Roseburg CC, Royal Oaks CC, Sah Hah Lee GC, Sandpines GL, Santiam GC, Senior Estates G&CC, Trysting Tree GC, Willamette Valley CC.
