The Oregon Golf Association (OGA) recently held its annual meeting at Willamette Valley Country Club.
"As a non-profit association of member-based clubs, the annual meeting allows our Directors a voice in the governance of the organization,” noted OGA President Lynn M. Myrick of Grants Pass Golf Club in Grants Pass, Ore. Every regular OGA member club has the obligation to appoint an OGA Director who serves as a liaison between the club and association. A regular club is located at a regulation-length golf course, and each facility may send up to two OGA Directors from the ranks of its member clubs. More than 360 Directors were invited to attend, with 80 attending.
This year the OGA Directors were asked to ratify several actions of the OGA Executive Committee. In his “State of the Association” address, Myrick answered the prevalent questions of the evening, “why are we raising dues, and why so much?” Click Here for the complete State of the Association address
A Question and Answer session was opened to the floor with Steve Belt of Bayou Golf Club in McMinnville, Ore. first inquiring as to the overall financials and the total membership revenues of the association. Len Johnson of Crooked River Ranch in Terrebonne, Ore. commented that he did not like how the association communicated the proposed dues increase, thinking it had been positioned as if the decision was already made. He had to call to inquire as to whether there was going to be a vote.
Ramona Martin from Agate Beach Women’s Club commented that the added benefit of a round of golf at the OGA Golf Course was not something that many out-of-town golfers would necessarily take advantage of, but Sam Sapp of Meadowlawn Golf Club commented that his club was using the new benefits as a recruiting tool. “I have three new members and two on the hook,” he said.
After significant discussion, the meeting was turned over to David P. Weiner, an Executive Committee member and the association’s legal counsel. He first called for a motion to ratify the actions of the Executive Committee including the annual dues increase from $20 to $30. With the motion made, a voice vote had overwhelming support from the Directors with a handful voting no. OGA by-laws require a simple majority for ratification.
The next vote was to ratify a change in the association’s by-laws moving the annual meeting from its current spring dates to the fall. The action passed unanimously.
The last vote was to ratify the actions of the nominating committee appointing Lynn M. Myrick to a second term as President, Cameron Azari of RedTail Golf Association to a second term as Vice President, and Eric Schoenstein, a Director-at-Large to the post of Treasurer. With no other nominations before the committee, the motion passed.
With another term as President, Myrick concluded the meeting with his goals and vision for the future of the Association. His primary goal is “to change the way we govern the organization.” He stated, “The time has come to structure our boards to be more consistent with modern business practices.” Click Here for his comments
