In 2008, the Oregon Golf Association partnered with the Woodburn Area Youth Golf Association (WAYGA) and signed on as a Programming Affiliate of The First Tee of The Children's Course.
With more than 50% of the surrounding population being Latino and 100% receiving subsidized breakfasts and lunches in area schools, the First Tee provides a proven program for teaching important life skills and core values such as honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence responsibility, perseverance, courtesy, and judgment as well as introduce this underserved demographic to the game of golf.
Over a seven month period, participation in our junior programming exploded by more than 300%. Fulfilling the needs of this large group of kids requires lots of help, and all our golf professionals along with retired head professional Chuck Siver all contributed to the program’s success.
Now, with a membership base well over 100 children, we began a process of planning for the future including the formation of plans to build a short course within the confines of the driving range. This facility would give WAYGA the ability to expand its membership to nearly 200 children, as well as add nearly 40 classes to the 2010 schedule. Along with these goals comes a need for fund-raising, and we’re assisting WAYGA in applying for necessary grants.
