About the Oregon Golf Association

The Oregon Golf Association (OGA) was formed in 1924 to conduct the Oregon Amateur golf championship which included both Men and Women.  The OGA is a 501(c) 6 non-profit amateur golf association governed by volunteer, amateur golfers who employ a full-time, professional staff of nine people.

Today, the OGA has evolved into a non-profit entity of more than 270 public and private clubs numbering approximately 50,000 members throughout Oregon and SW Washington.  The OGA is unique in that its membership is comprised of all demographics including Men, Women, Adults, Seniors, Juniors, Private and Public golfers.

Licensed by the United States Golf Association as guardian of the game of golf for this region, the OGA promotes enhancement and expansion of the game of golf by protecting the game’s integrity and valued traditions, as well as promoting opportunities for all that want to play by leading in the development of member and information services.

Subsidiary businesses include Oregon Junior Golf Fund, Inc. (OJGF), a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charitable foundation and OGA Golf Course, Inc. (OGAGC).

OJGF oversees a nationally recognized junior golf program for over 1,100 youth in Oregon and SW Washington.  Each year, the Oregon Golf Association presents more than 60 days of competition and more than 6,000 rounds of competitive golf for Junior Golfers ranging in age from 8 through 17.  It also has developed one of the premiere regional junior golf competitions in the country, the Hogan Cup.  Hogan Cup alumni include tour players such as Bobby Clampett, Fred Couples, Joe Rassett, Jack Renner, Lennie Clements, Scott Simpson, Rick Fehr, Robert Gamez, Bill Sanders, Kirk Triplett, Jim Nelford, John Fought, Peter Jacobsen, Jeff Quinney, Casey Martin, Michael Putnam, Ricky Barnes, Jason Gore and Tiger Woods.

The OGA is one of eight amateur golf associations in the country that owns and/or operates a for-profit public golf course.  More than 40,000 rounds of golf are played annually at the OGA Golf Course, located in Woodburn, Ore.

NEW WEBSITE FEATURES!

If you are an OGA Member, all you need to do is register on the OGA website.  Sure, the first time might take a little longer since you'll need to fill out a form with your first and last name, GHIN number and a few more fields, but that time will reap many rewards in the future.

Once your account is activated, you'll be able to login to the website and have access to all sorts of new features.  From the Member Page you can Post A Score (assuming your Club allows Internet score posting), and you'll no longer have to enter your GHIN number and last name because our site remembers it for you.

Each process will be just 1-click away.  You'll also be able to look at your Index and Score History.  Most important, you'll be able to update your GHIN contact information.  That's extremely important.  Without your address we can't send you many of your 2009 OGA Benefits such as you're OGA/USGA Alliance Bag Tag, Pacific Northwest Golfer magazine or your certificate for a free round of golf at the OGA Golf Course.

The login is located on the Home Page, and the first time you'll have to enter the username and password you created.  Your browser will store your information so for every subsequent visit all you'll need to do is press the Submit button to get to the Member Page.

Also, please take note of the Player Achievements section on the Home Page.  Let your friends and all visitors to the OGA website learn of your accomplishments on the golf course such as a Hole-In-One, Double Eagle or Shooting Your Age.  Golfers who are in good standing with their OGA Member Club and who register their feats will receive a special certificate recognizing their achievement that's suitable for framing!

2009 Evans Scholars Recipients

Five scholars representing high schools throughout Oregon were recently awarded the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship, a one-year full tuition and housing scholarship renewable for four years - a potential value exceeding $50,000 per scholar.  The program is administered by the Western Golf Association and supported locally by the Oregon Golf Association and the Pacific Northwest Golf Association. Oregon scholarship finalists were interviewed at a Selection Meeting held March 5 at Royal Oaks Country Club.

There are four primary criteria for scholarship grants. (1) Candidates, who are nominated by their golf clubs, must have a strong caddie record, with a minimum of two years of outstanding service. (2) Candidates must have an excellent high school academic record, achieving above a B average in college preparatory classes. Applicants must also provide ACT college test scores to further determine academic potential. (3) Candidates must demonstrate significant financial need. Over the years, the Evans Scholars Foundation has assisted thousands of young people from families with very modest financial means. (4) Finally, letters of recommendation from club and high school officials attest to the applicant’s high moral character.

The graduation rate for Evans Scholars (nationally) is 90 percent, far above the national average of under 50 percent for all students entering four-year colleges and universities.  The average GPA for an Evans Scholar is 3.22

The annual funds required to maintain the tuition, housing and administration of the $10 million annual program (the largest individually funded program in the nation) are generated from more than 35,000 WGA Par Club Members, 100,000 participants in the WGA Bag Tag program, alumni contributions, endowments and proceeds from the BMW Championship a PGA TOUR event.  Locally, additional funds are raised through an annual fundraiser and contributions from the Oregon Golf Assocaition as well as the Brian Henninger Foundation and Tournament Golf Foundation Inc, organizers of the LPGA Safeway Classic.

How to Join the OGA

The Oregon Golf Association's bylaws have established our 501(c)(6) membership organization as an association of member clubs. When you join an OGA Member Club, you can feel proud knowing that you have joined an alliance committed to safeguarding the integrity of the game, promoting fair play, preserving the game’s traditions and enhancing the playing environment for golfers.

All OGA Member Clubs are licensed by the Oregon Golf Association to provide USGA Handicap Indexes™ to their members.  A club is defined by the USGA Handicap System as any group of 10 or more golfers that operate under a set of bylaws that establish a handicapping policy, elect officers, form committees and play together on a regular basis.  The most important aspect of ensuring a bonafide and credible USGA Handicap Index is that your scores be subject to peer review by others that can attest to your play.

You may join a Regular Club (one that is associated with a regulation golf course).  Regular clubs can be found at nearly all public, private and resort courses in Oregon and SW Washington.  You may also join an Associate Club.  Associate Clubs are not affiliated with any specific golf course but are often formed by golfers with some other relationship to one another.  For instance, we have social clubs, church groups, employee groups and even restaurants that have formed Associate Clubs.

All our clubs can be found in the ClubFinder on ExploreOregonGolf.com.  Here you can search for clubs in your region and also get more information on the benefits and services provided by each club.  Each club will charge different membership fees, so we encourage you to find the club that best meets your needs (remember, only a portion of your club's fees are remitted to the OGA).

For those of you not interested in a Handicap Index, unfortunately at this time there is not an OGA membership option that does not include this service.

Not all USGA Handicap Indexes are equal.  Click Here to find out why.

The portion of your club membership that provides you with OGA benefits includes more than just the USGA Handicap Index.  Click here for information on all the tangible benefits you can receive from the OGA when you join an OGA Member Club (some of the benefits require that your mailing address and/or email address be included in GHIN system otherwise we are unable to send you the benefits).

OGA Programs & Services

Over the years, the Oregon Golf Association has expanded the number of areas in which it serves it's members. When a golfer joins an OGA Club, a portion of the dues that member pays is remitted to the OGA in order to fund a wide variety of activities that benefit golf in Oregon and Southwest Washington.  Click here for a flyer that details all the benefits provided to individuals, clubs and courses in the region.  Just a few of those benefits are listed below.

So You Want A USGA Handicap Index®

Whether you just want a means to measure your ability, or you need a way to measure yourself against your playing buddies so that you can take them on in fair and equitable games, you should consider getting a USGA Handicap Index®.  Even more important, if you're interested in playing in events hosted at various golf courses, you normally cannot even enter unless you have an official USGA Handicap Index®.

A USGA Handicap Index is more than just a number that is computed using a formula developed by the USGA.  It is a process that is governed by a set of Rules that complement the Rules of Golf®.  These Rules are known as the USGA Handicap System and the most important provision is that you must be a member of a club so that the process of "peer review" can take place.

Caveat emptor is Latin for "Let the buyer beware."  If you want assurance that your are spending your money wisely, please know that a bona fide USGA Handicap Index is not something you can purchase on your own. You MUST be a member of a club that is licensed by the USGA or the State/Regional Golf Association.

In Oregon and SW Washington, nearly 100% of the licensed clubs are OGA Member Clubs, and it is not uncommon for events not to accept a handicap index issued by a club that is not an OGA Member Club.  When you join an OGA Member Club, you can feel proud knowing that you have joined an alliance committed to safeguarding the integrity of the game, promoting fair play, preserving the game’s traditions and enhancing the playing environment for all golfers.

Clubs must meet some basic requirements in order to be licensed to issue a USGA Handicap Index.   For instance, USGA Handicap System requires a club to have at least 10 members who play together regularly, that the club elects officers and operates under a set of bylaws, and that the club establishes a written handicapping policy that ensures the club practices "peer review" so to keep everyone honest.

There are several other provisions a club must meet. You'll be pleased to learn that real estate – i.e., a golf course and/or a clubhouse – is not one of the requirements. You could join or form a club at a public course, at work, at your church, business or social group or or even form your own club just between friends.

To find a club in your area that provides you the benefits you are looking for in a club besides a USGA Handicap Index, visit our ClubFinder on ExploreOregonGolf.com

How To Form An Associate Member Club

Do you know at least ten golfers that would be interested in forming a golf group? Do you and your friends often get together and play, but don't carry official handicaps and would like to?  You're solution is to form an Associate Club.

Associate Clubs are groups of people not necessarily associated with any particular golf course.  In fact, Associate Clubs are often groups of employees (Nike) or members of other types of clubs (Kiwanis, Rotary, etc).  Sometimes, a business uses an Associate club as a means of promoting comaraderie among its patrons (Porterhouse GC).  Also, there are golf leagues that have also formed an Associate Club (Maverix Golf Tour).

First, call the OGA office and ask to have an Associate Packet sent to you.  This packet will answer most of your questions and provide your group that information necessary to start a club and help your members dramatically increase their enjoyment of the game!

Next, you'll need to conduct a group meeting, read the OGA and USGA materials in your packet, elect officers, form committees, and write by-laws. Call us to discuss compliance with the USGA Handicap System and related questions. Compile a roster of members and their addresses. Decide on what courses you will play, and when you'll have regular play days and tournaments.

When appointing your Handicapping Committee (or just one Handicap Chairman) pick a golfer whom has access to a PC, and will enjoy working with handicapping software. The Handicap Chairman should then call Kelly at the OGA office and get advice about running a test to check for PC compatibility. Remember, the GHIN (Golf Handicap Information Network) software is free with your membership, and turns your handicapping task into a job done quickly and easily with a little training from us!

After the OGA has received and reviewed all of the necessary paperwork, and your Handicap Chairman has successfully completed a software test, the Handicapping Department at the OGA will order your new GHIN software (and manuals, too) and will even install it for you and show you how to use it. The GHIN programs will allow you to post scores, add and delete golfers, keep a data base of addresses, look up the Rules of Golf, set up tournaments and more.

Your group will then be recognized as an official OGA Associate Member Club and will receive USGA Handicap Indexes, updated thirteen times a year. Official handicaps will allow your members to not only enter tournaments, but also will afford them more enjoyable and equitable matches with fellow golfers, all while learning more about amateur golf in our region! Not to mention the fact that you will then be able to play our beautiful Members Course at Tukwila, at a significant discount. Refer to the "Membership Services" page for information on prices and course details.

Forming your very own Associate Member Club is easier than improving your golf game!

2008 Evans Scholars Recipients

Eight scholars representing high schools throughout Oregon were recently awarded the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship, a one-year full tuition and housing scholarship renewable for four years - a potential value exceeding $50,000 per scholar.  The program is administered by the Western Golf Association and supported locally by the Oregon Golf Association and the Pacific Northwest Golf Association. Oregon scholarship finalists were interviewed at a Selection Meeting held March 6 at Riverside Golf & Country Club.
