101st Oregon Amateur Underway

Canby, Ore (June 21, 2010) -- Warm weather and sunshine marked both the first day of summer as well as the start of the 101st Oregon Amateur Championship. Defending Men’s Champion Andrew Vijarro leads the morning wave after firing a phenomenal 6–under par 36-30-66 on the 7,079-yard par-72 golf course. Vijarro, who missed his birdie putt on the 18th hole to shoot 30 on his back nine commented after his round, “well 29 would have been better!”

The pairings off hole one in the morning included some past and current state and regional champions including Justin Kadin and Chris Maletis. Kadin, who won this year’s Oregon Public Links Championship at Wildhorse Resort in Pendleton, Ore. played in the second group and sits in second place after shooting 33-34-67. Maletis, one of the top ranked seniors in the country, playing in the same grouping as Kadin, currently sits in a tie for fourth place after a solid round of 36-34-70. Maletis was the winner of the 2010 PNGA Senior Amateur at Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen, B.C. where he defended his title for the second straight year.

Damian Telles a teammate of Kadin’s at the University of Idaho sits in third place after a round of 35-33-68. Along with Telles there a total of 16 men who finished at even par or better to round out the morning wave the average score at 75.6.

Yet, to tee off today are 42 men and 40 women playing. Temperatures are expected to be in the mid 60’s with very little and partial clouds, which should set up for more low scores from the afternoon rounds.
