Canby, Ore. (June 23, 2010) - Medalist and defending champion Andrew Vijarro scored seven birdies and no bogeys to easily win his first round match over George Hale of Lake Oswego, Ore. 6 & 5 at the 101st Oregon Amateur at Willamette Valley Country Club.
After his round, Hale commented, “he [Vijarro] never missed a shot. Never. He had a twenty footer for par and he made it like it was nothing.” Vijarro, who was never down in his match put the pedal down early making 6 of his seven birdies on the front nine. Vijarro’s next opponent is 32nd seed, Travis Milleman of McMinnville, Ore. who beat Anthony Taylor-Weber handily 7 & 6.
The biggest upset of the day came from University of Portland freshman Nick Chianello of Gresham, Ore., who snuck into match play via chip in during a playoff for the final spot in the 64-man field. At one point Chianello was three down in his match, but he made four clutch birdies on his final seven holes to beat local favorite Bryce Fisher of Canby, Ore. 2 & 1. However, Fisher's brother Robbie, who recently regained his amateur status, was able to advance to the next round of matches.
For the most part, those advancing to the round of 32 primarily included the young guns consisting of both recent and current collegiate players. In addition to Vijarro, the Oregon Ducks saw Isaiah Telles, Eric Grimberg, Jack Dukeminier, Jack Paton and Robbie Ziegler winning their matches. Chianello was joined in the winners column by Jake Wagner, Hans Reimers and Samuel Kloenne. The Oregon State Beavers were represented by Tyler Simpson, Brandon Taylor, Casey Kind, Paul Peterson and Assistant Coach Tim Sundseth, and the Idaho Vandals had both Justin Kadin and Damian Telles winning in the first round of match play. Lastly, brothers Kevin and Armen Kirakossian, who both played for the University of Texas Pan American this year, also advanced.
Thursday's play begins at 7:30am, with those successful in their morning matches also having to play in the afternoon with the hopes of reaching Friday's quarterfinals.
