Creswell, Ore. (Saturday, August 14, 2010) - Sweltering record-setting temperatures heated the air, but not the scoring at the 58th Oregon Men's Stroke Play Championship at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell, Ore. In a field of 150 players, only four remained at even par or better between the senior and open division players.
After today's round, the field was cut to the top 23 Seniors plus ties and the top 50 Open division players plus ties. The cut line was 3-strokes higher than last year in the senior division and 4-strokes higher in the open division.
Three time defending champion Pat O'Donnell of Happy Valley, Ore. lapped the senior division and will take a 5-stroke lead into tomorrow's final round. O'Donnell shot an incredible 5-under par 68-69--137 showing an unparalleled mastery of the difficult 6,533-yard, par 71 layout.
Only four players have an outside shot at taking the title away from O'Donnell. Gregg Guernsay of Vancouver, Wash. is closest at even par 70-72--142. Three time champion Chris Maletis of Portland, Ore., presently ranked 10th in the naion according to Golfweek's Senior Amateur rankings is 7-strokes off the pace at 2-over par 72-72--144 along with Mike Reuther of Redmond, Ore.
First round leaders Jake Wagner of Portland, Ore. and Alex Moore of Richland, Wash. faltered shooting 78 and 79 respectively. Moore finished 7-strokes behind 36-hole leader Jack Dukeminier of Eugene, Ore., a senior to be on the Oregon Ducks Men's Golf team.
Dukeminier was one of only two players in the Open Division to shoot under par rounds today finishing at 3-under par 72-69--141 and just 2-strokes ahead of defending champion Paul Peterson of Salem, Ore. who finished at 1-under par 72-71--143.
Players within 5-strokes of the lead include reigning Oregon Public Links champion Justin Kadin of Corvallis, Ore. and Arthur Kim of Tigard, Ore. who are tied for third at 2-over par 146.
The Oregon Men's Stroke Play showcases the best male players in Oregon and SW Washington with the minimum qualification for entrants is a handicap index of 5.0 or less for male amateur golfers 13 years of age and older, and those 50 years of age and older may play in a Senior Division and must have a handicap index of 10.0 or less.
