Simanton earns Safeway Classic berth

North Plains, Ore. – Former Lake Oswego High star Amy Beth Simanton and veteran LPGA professional Jane Bartholomew both earned the final two spots in the LPGA Safeway Classic in a Monday qualifier at Pumpkin Ridge Ghost Creek.  The tournament proper begins Friday.

The Monday qualifier, typically only open to LPGA players, also included amateurs that qualified for an additional chance based on their finish at the Safeway Classic Amateur Open held last month.

Simanton, who completed her freshman season at UC - Davis, won the 100th Oregon Amateur last year as a high school senior.

Simanton and Bartholomew both shot 1-under-par 71.

Bartholomew turned pro in 1996 and has $928,907 in career earnings, with 10 top-10 finishes. A former Duke golfer, she has started two tournaments this season but hasn't won any prize money.

Only four players took part in the qualifier. Amateur A. Ram Choi shot 80, and Sue Daniels came in at 84.
