Sunriver, Ore. (Sunday,August 22, 2010) - An 8-year run in Oregon came to an end as Fred Funk, who has dominated Crosswater like no other player on the Champions Tour, fired a 3-under par 69 to come from behind and finish at 12-under par, winning the JELD-WEN Tradition for the second time in three years.
Funk had the lead going into the par-4 9th hole where he 3-putted and brought a slew of players back into contention at 11-under. While no one was making a move up the leaderboard on another windy afternoon, Funk was finally able to separate himself from the pack with a 15-foot birdie putt on the 598-yard, par-5 16th
Funk, who won the third Champions major of his career, began the round two strokes behind third-round leader Tom Lehman. Funk was in contention throughout the day, at one point making seven consecutive pars before his birdie at 16.
Funk's 276 total is the highest winning score in the Tradition since 2002, when Jim Thorpe won at Desert Mountain at 11-under 277.
Eight players were tied or had the outright lead at some point on the back nine. When the final group had five holes left, 12 players were within two strokes. It was an exciting finish to a tournament that first came to Portland in 2003 and moved to Central Oregon in 2007.
Last week, Klamath Falls based Jeld-Wen Corporation announced that it would not be renewing its contract with the Champions tour, ending its 8-year run as a result of the global down-turn in the housing industry having a significant financial impact on the privately held Window and doors manufacturer.
The Champions Tour is expected to announce its future plans for The Tradition later this week.
Beaverton-based Peter Jacobsen Sports also mentioned its hopes to continue its own tradition of bringing professional golf to the region and will explore other opportunities whether its a different Champions Tour event, PGA Tour event or exhibition similar to the Fred Meyer Challenge which it ran for years prior to bringing The Tradition to Oregon.
