OGA, Oregon Junior Golf Announce Local Teams for 50th Hogan Cup

PORTLAND, Ore. ­­– Eight players will represent the OGA and Oregon Junior Golf at next week’s 50th Eddie Hogan Cup Team Matches, announced Tuesday.

The 50th edition of the Hogan Cup, featuring some of the top junior golfers from the western United States and Canada, will take place August 11-12, 2018 at Riverside Golf & Country Club in Portland, Ore. The annual event pits 12 teams against each other in a 36-hole team tournament.

This year’s teams were announced following play at the 2018 Portland City/Bob Allard Memorial, held July 30-31 at Rose City Golf Course in Portland, Ore.

As the host association, the OGA and Oregon Junior Golf receives two teams annually at the Hogan Cup. This year’s Oregon teams are:

TEAM OREGON #1

  • Nate Stember (Portland, Ore.)
  • Johnny Ward (Lake Oswego, Ore.)
  • Isaac Buerger (Redmond, Ore.)
  • Mateo Fuenmayor (Beaverton, Ore.)


TEAM OREGON #2

  • Brody Marconi (Portland, Ore.)
  • Owen Huntington (Camas, Wash.)
  • Austin Carnese (Portland, Ore.)
  • Tyler Vassar (The Dalles, Ore.)

Stember, 17, is the 2018 Oregon Junior Amateur and Oregon Junior Stroke Play champion, and has had a fantastic year thus far. Along with winning two of the biggest Oregon Junior Golf events of the summer, he also advanced to the round of 32 at the 2018 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, earning medalist honors at the sectional qualifier, as well. Stember also won this year’s Centennial Junior and finished in second at the Peter Jacobsen Junior Challenge. Stember was on Team Oregon #1 in 2017.

Ward, 16, has been on the cusp of victory all season long. He finished runner-up at both the Oregon Junior Amateur and the Oregon Junior Stroke Play, as well as at the Peter Jacobsen Junior Challenge. He has top-5 finishes at both the Portland City/Bob Allard Memorial and the Southern Oregon Junior. Ward was a member of Team Oregon #2 in 2017.

Buerger, 16, was also a member of Team Oregon #2 last year. He has two wins this year: The 2018 Centennial Junior and the Southern Oregon Junior. The Central Oregon native also finished runner-up at the Central Oregon Junior and the Central Willamette Junior. Fuenmayor, 15, earned the victory at this week’s Portland City/Bob Allard Memorial to vault himself into the final spot on Team Oregon #1. He also won the Peter Jacobsen Junior Challenge, and earned third place at the Klamath Basin Junior.

Marconi, 15, has two victories this season, winning at the 2018 Central Oregon Junior and the 2018 Central Willamette Junior. He also finished runner-up in the Boys Division (ages 14-15) at the Oregon Junior Amateur. Huntington, 15, has five top-10 finishes in 2018. He was runner-up at the Central Willamette Junior and Southern Oregon Junior, and finished third at the Central Oregon Junior. He finished sixth at the Oregon Junior Stroke Play, and 10th at the Portland City/Bob Allard Memorial.

Carnese, 17, was a member of Team Oregon #1 in 2017, and represented Oregon at this year’s Junior Americas Cup. He advanced to the semifinals at the 2018 Oregon Junior Amateur, and finished third at both the Centennial Junior and the Southern Oregon Junior. Vassar, 17, used a strong finish at the Portland City/Bob Allard Memorial to earn the final Hogan Cup spot. He earned fourth place this week, to go along with a win earlier this month at the Klamath Basin Junior. He also advanced to the semifinals of the 2018 Oregon Junior Amateur.
