Stember, Gailey Win Titles at 21st Oregon Junior Stroke Play; Junior America's Cup Teams Announced

WOODBURN, Ore. – Nate Stember (Portland, Ore.) and Victoria Gailey (Tigard, Ore.) won titles at the 21st Oregon Junior Stroke Play Championship, held July 3-5, 2018 at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn, Ore.

The 54-hole event, regarded as one of Oregon Junior Golf’s majors, reduced the field in half after Wednesday’s round, with the top half of scores (plus ties) advancing to Thursday’s final round.

Stember, a rising senior at Lincoln High School in Portland, overcame a two-shot deficit entering the final round. On Thursday, Stember stayed steady on the front nine, getting to 2-under par for the tournament. His back nine featured two birdies and no bogeys, finishing at 4-under par for the event with scores of 73-70-69 – 212 (-4).

Battling throughout the day with Stember was Johnny Ward (Lake Oswego, Ore.), who just last week played Stember in the final of the Oregon Junior Amateur. Ward, 2-under entering play on Thursday, at one point was 5-under par after birdieing three of the first six holes. A string of two bogies dropped him one shot back of Stember, but a birdie on the difficult par-4 16th brought him back to 4-under par for the tournament, and the two players went on to a playoff.

After two additional holes, Stember emerged with the victory – his second-consecutive win after last week’s Oregon Junior Amateur.

Ward earned second place with scores of 70-72-70 – 212 (-4). Nicholas Watts (Springfield, Ore.) finished in third place after shooting 70-73-71 – 214 (-2), while Nick Lasko (Clackamas, Ore.) shot 74-72-70 – 214 (E) to earn fourth place.

Gailey, a recent graduate of Tigard High School, entered Thursday with a one-shot lead. After bogeying three of the first six holes, Gailey recovered with a birdie on the par-5 9th hole, and shot a solid 1-over par on the back nine to finish at 8-over par for the tournament with scores of 73-76-75 – 224.

Olivia Venderby (West Linn, Ore.) challenged Gailey during the final round, forcing a playoff after shooting an impressive 72 (E) on Thursday. Venderby advanced to last week’s Oregon Junior Amateur semifinals, but fell in 21 holes to eventual champion Olivia Loberg.

Gailey and Venderby played three extra holes Thursday, with Gailey winning on the third playoff hole. This marked the second Oregon Junior Stroke Play win for Gailey; she also won in 2016.

Venderby shot 76-76-72 – 224 (+8) to earn second place. Elli Gordon (Dallas, Ore.), Jessica Ponce (Beaverton, Ore.) and Mary Scott Wolfe (Beaverton, Ore.) all tied for third place at 226 (+10).
