Jacob Varriano Medals at Final 2018 Oregon Amateur Qualifier

BLUE RIVER, Ore. - Jacob Varriano (Olympia, Wash.) fired an even-par 72 on Saturday to earn medalist honors at the third and final 2018 Oregon Amateur qualifier, held June 9th at Tokatee Golf Club in Blue River, Ore.

Twenty-three players advanced to the 109th Oregon Amateur Championship, which will take place June 18-23, 2018 at Bend Golf Club in Bend, Ore.

Varriano was the only player to not shoot over-par on Saturday. His four birdies through 12 holes saw him at 2-under, but bogeys on the 13th and 18th holes set him back to even-par. Even with the finish, Varriano earned medalist honors by three shots.

Earlier this year, Varriano was the co-medalist at one of the two 2018 Oregon Mid-Amateur qualifiers. In 2016, Varriano advanced to the round of 32 at the Oregon Amateur as the No. 56 seed.

Three players tied for second place at Saturday's qualifier, including two Oregon State golfers -- Alec Berrey (Corvallis, Ore.) and Richie Mikesell (Bend, Ore.). James Chrisman (Bend, Ore.) tied with the two Beaver players at 3-over par.

Ben Wanichek (Eugene, Ore.) of Richmond University and Vance Lynch (Eugene, Ore.), Head Girls Golf Coach at Sheldon High School in Eugene, both shot 4-over 76.

In a two-person playoff to determine the final qualifier, Dan Van Donk (Bend, Ore.) defeated Kolby Boisen (Corvallis, Ore.) to advance to the Championship proper. Both players shot 83 (+11).

Other notable qualifiers on Saturday included University of Oregon golfer Marcel Boet (Eugene, Ore.), Concordia University - Portland golfer Jaxson Daskalos (Albany, Ore.) and 2016 Oregon Senior Men's Amateur runner-up Tom Zupan (Portland, Ore.).

The final field for the 109th Oregon Amateur will be confirmed later this week, with first and second-round tee times being announced at a later date.
