The top four seeds on the women’s side advanced in the opening round of match play. No. 1 seed Lexi Perry was pushed in her opening round match but eventually prevailed, 1 up through 18, to No. 32 Natalie Yen.
The women’s field, which includes a match play bracket of 32 players, only saw three upsets in the opening round. The No. 24 seed Aerin Song upended No. 9 seed Ellen Secor, 4 up. Sophie Dalfonsi, the No. 18 seed, topped the 1t5th seed Yvonne Vinceri, 3 up. No. 19 Tannica Porter defeated No. 14 Jasmine Cabajar, 2 up.
The top four seeds on the men’s side – Robbie Ziegler, Pat O’Donnell, Alex Wrenn and Cody Roth were all victorious.
The men, which started the day with 64 players, had some key upsets with the No. 7, No. 9 and No. 10 seeds all falling today.
The six-day competition runs today through Saturday at Columbia Edgewater Country Club. The course is par 71 and playing at 6,860 yards for the men, while playing 6,101 yards and par 72 for the women.
Wednesday also marked the start of the 37th Oregon Senior Women’s Amateur Championship. That competition included one stroke play qualifying round, and will be followed up by three rounds of match play.
First round matches begin Thursday morning. Ginny Burkey shot 4-over par in today’s qualifying, while Loree McKay and Katy Wright finished tied for second at 5-over par.
Burkey and Lara Tennant take the top seeds into the match play competition.
