Under the old system, the USGA limit for men’s Indexes was 36.4, and for women was 40.4. Now it’s much higher – at 54.0 regardless of gender.
With this new maximum, the WHS is meant to be inclusive and is designed for all players. Now it will be much easier to encourage inexperienced golfers to sign up who might have previously shied away from getting a handicap. Not only is it completely acceptable to carry a higher handicap, it only takes 3 rounds (a total of 54 holes of golf) to get one!
Even with the new higher limits, a Club’s Handicap and / or Tournament Committee always have the right to impose their own limits for club events depending on the format, as they deem necessary.
