Oregon Am Down to Final Eight in Match Play Brackets

The match play portion of the competition was narrowed down to the final eight competitors Thursday at The 111th Oregon Amateur Championship in Portland. The men played both the Round of 32 and 16 – while the women played the Round of 16 – on a sun-soaked day at Columbia Edgewater Country Club.

Seven of the matches went according to the seeding on the women’s side. The only upset – a No. 12 over No. 5 – came when Amanda Jacobs defeated Tya Seth in 21 holes.

Top seed Lexi Perry will match up against No. 8 seed Kennedy Swan in Friday’s first quarterfinal match at 8:02 am. Following that pairing will be No. 4 Alexa Udom versus the two-time defending champion and fifth-seed Ellie Slama, with that group to tee off at 8:10 am.

In the other quarterfinal pairings, a surging No. 2 seed Victoria Gailey will battle Jacobs at 8:18 am. Gailey cruised to a 7 up win over No. 18 seed Sophie Dalfonsi in the round of 16. No. 3 seed Montgomery Ferreira and No. 6 seed Mary Scott Wolfe will square off in the last quarterfinal scheduled for 8:26 am.

Six of the 16 matches to start the day were upsets according to the seeding in the men’s field.

No. 17 Austin Spicer had the biggest upset of the day in the quarterfinal round when he outlasted 2018 champion Robbie Ziegler to win in 23 holes. Spicer advances to take on No. 8 seed Brandon Eyre in the first men’s quarterfinal match on Friday at 8:32 am.

No. 13 Bryce Wortman, who upended fourth-seed Cody Roth 2&1 in the Round of 16, moves on to face No. 21 Daniel Snoey at 8:40 am. Snoey, the runner-up in last year’s event, finished the day with a 5&4 win over fifth-seeded Shawn Lu.

No. 2 seed Pat O’Donnell continued his strong play with a pair of wins Thursday. He advances to face No. 55 Ben Wanichek in a quarterfinal slated for 8:48 am.

The winner of that match will face the victor between No. 19 Trevor Harding and No. 27 Joe Neuheisel. Neuheisel started the day with a win over the six-seed, Sam Renner, in a battle that went 22 holes.

The 37th Oregon Senior Women’s Amateur moved into the match play portion of their schedule, narrowing their field to the final eight competitors.

The senior women are the first off the tee box on Friday morning. Top seed Ginny Burkey will face off against No. 8 Wendy Sheasgreen in the early match slated for 7:30 am. A No. 4 vs. No. 5 contest pits Katy Wright and Leilani Norman at 7:38am.

Three-time defending champion and second seed Lara Tennant will match up against the No. 10 seed Mary Jacobs at 7:46 am. No. 3 Loree McKay and No. 6 Tandi Thomas will meet in the last quarterfinal at 7:54 am.
