Portland’s Children’s Course Begins Construction of “One-of-a-Kind” Learning Center

Portland, OR – The Children’s Course will break ground on January 22 on the construction of a new Learning Center. Located in Gladstone, the expanded Learning Center will give the organization room for more children and expanded one-on-one educational mentoring. The new facility triples the size of the previous building and enables the Children’s Course to serve 1500 children from the Portland metro area annually.

The Children’s Course is a result of a 1996 vision of Duncan and Cindy Campbell who wanted to create a golf course that would be dedicated to children. Providing a location for children to learn and play the game of golf was just part of their plan. They envisioned using golf to provide positive youth development by focusing on instilling integrity and making people of rich character. “The Learning Center will provide the ability to reach more kids, more often, in a safe environment. More kids can learn lessons for life—and have fun while they are doing it,” said Duncan Campbell.

The Learning Center is an educational facility and community center—a laboratory where trained coaches and educational mentors create pathways to academic success as well as fun and fitness within the constructs of golf. The facility provides for year-round instruction. The building will be ADA compliant to better serve children with special needs.

The fundraising effort began in 2018 after design plans were drawn up by ORANGEWALLstudios. Contributions have come from local companies, foundations and the golf community. Major contributors include the Maybelle Clark MacDonald Foundation, Murdock Foundation, Campbell Foundation, Stan and Leslie Renecker, Dan Harmon, Cambia Health Solutions of the Oregon Community Foundation, Campbell Global, and Reliable Credit. Precision Construction, a division of Hoffman Construction, is responsible for building the new Learning Center. “It has been truly a team effort in making the Learning Center a reality,” said Marti Loeb, Children’s Course Executive Director. “We thank the many individuals who have contributed money as well as their time to make this happen.”

The new Learning Center is slated to open Q3, 2020. The groundbreaking event takes place at The Children’s Course, 19825 River Rd, Gladstone, OR 97027 on January 22 from 11:30am-1:00pm.
