Seven Advance to Sectional Qualifying Round for 2019 U.S. Open
Seven players advanced to the sectional qualifying round for the 2019 U.S. Open at a local qualifier played Monday at Waverley Country Club in Portland.
Hans Reimers and Harrison Moir earned co-medalist honors each carding 4-under 66. Reimers, a professional from Phoenix, Ariz., tallied an event-high seven birdies, doing most of his damage on par 3s with deuces on holes 6, 9, 11 and 14.
Moir, an amateur from Tigard, was even par through the first nine before dropping birdies on his final three holes to close the round at 4-under par.
Matt Marshall, a professional from Yamhill, shot 3-under to finish alone in third place. A pair of professionals finished fourth and fifth respectively. Zachary Bixler (Richland, Wash.) shot 2-under 68, while Chad Fribley (Tualatin) finished 1-under par.
Nine competitors ended the round at even par before battling in a playoff for those sixth and seventh qualifying positions. Two more professionals, Kevin Murphy (Gold Hill) and Robert McKnight (Las Vegas, Nev.) prevailed with birdies on the first hole of the playoff.
The nearest sectional qualifiers will be played June 3 at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla, Wash., Big Canyon Country Club and Newport Beach Country Club both located in Newport Beach, Calif. This year’s championship proper will be held June 13-16 at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Monday's local qualifier was one of 13 USGA qualifying competitions the Oregon Golf Association will administer in 2019.
