Top Seed Tennant Advances to Quarterfinal Round at U.S. Senior Women's Amateur
Lara Tennant advanced to the quarterfinal round on Monday at the 59th U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur played at the Lakewood Club in Point Clear, Ala. She is one of eight players remaining and moves on to face No. 9 seed Sally Krueger on Tuesday at 6am (PT).
Tennant posted wins in the Round of 32 and Round of 16 on Monday. Her opening round against Judith Kyrinis went 19 holes, while in the ensuing round she registered a 2 and 1 victory over Kelley Nittoli.
Tennant, from Portland, earned the top seed in the match play bracket after posting scores of 72-71 during the 36-hole stroke play qualifying. Tennant recorded a win over Tina Barker (2&1) in the opening round of match play on Sunday.
Fellow OGA Member Rosie Cook, from Bend, also qualified for match play but bowed out in theound of 32. Cook finished tied for 38th in stroke play qualifying (80-78). She upset Anna Morales in the opening round of match play, 1 up, before falling in the Round of 32 to Shelly Stouffer, 4&3.
This year's competition is being played at 5,846 yards and par 72 on Lakewood Club's Dogwood Course. The championship format consists of 36 holes of stroke play over the course of the first two days, followed by a match play competition with the top 64 scorers. The event will conclude with the title match set for Wednesday, Sept. 15.
Tennant is seeking her third consecutive U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur crown. She won back-to-back U.S. Senior Women’s Am titles in 2018 and 2019. The 2020 event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Other OGA Members participating this week were Cappy Mack and Ginny Burkey who both missed the cut during stroke play qualifying.
