OGA Volunteer of the Year | Oregon Golf Association

Each year the Oregon Golf Association honors the OGA Volunteer of the Year during Volunteer Appreciation Day.  This year the award went to Dave Scharringhausen for his work in Championships and Oregon Junior Golf.

Dave has been an OGA Volunteer since 2015 and has taken the Volunteer Coordinator position on at most of the Championships he works. Dave stepped up this year and travelled to many out of town events and working more than 50 days this season. He has taken the Volunteer Coordinator position to a new level and always makes sure everything is setup for the day and volunteers are taken care of on the golf course. He often is the first to arrive on site to set everything up before he has to leave for his job that same afternoon. Dave even travelled down and back to Medford in the same day to help with a US Amateur Qualifier at Eagle Point in July. He is a dedicated volunteer, willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done and make sure the tournament runs smoothly.

Three Volunteer of the Year honorees were awarded to John McCausland, Suzanne Peterson and Carol May.

John McCausland was honored as a Volunteer of the Year Honoree. John is a Rules Official and works both with the Championship department and Oregon Junior Golf during the season. His knowledge of the Rules of Golf is a great asset to have at the tournaments he works including all of his years he has spent as a Rules Official. One of his many tasks on a tournament day includes setting and checking the tees. His attention to detail insures the tees are set exactly where they need to be and are correct before the first group of the day arrives.

Suzanne Peterson was also honored as a Volunteer of the Year Honoree. Suzanne was previously a school teacher prior to becoming a volunteer and brought her perfect penmanship with her as a volunteer. This quickly turned into Suzanne becoming the scoreboard volunteer who puts all of the scores on the scoreboard. She enjoys it so much, both Shanda and Brent have continued to come up with more ideas and hole-by-hole scoreboards for Suzanne. The scoreboard area is a gathering area for players and spectators and with the help of Suzanne, it has elevated the tournament experience with additional summary boards and anything else Brent and Shanda can come up with.

Carol May was honored as the Course Rating Volunteer of the Year honoree. Carol has been volunteering since 2008. In the last year, Carol has stepped up to join the ranks of Team Leaders. She has been diligent about learning even more of the tedious details about adjustments and obstacles in Course Rating. She has also been helpful to provide her input as a lower handicapped female golfer which has helped to provide more accurate ratings.

The Oregon Golf Association would not be able to conduct Championships, USGA Qualifiers and rate courses without the dedication of our volunteers. A big THANK YOU to all of our volunteers for all the time they donate to amateur golf in Oregon and SW Washington!

** The award is named after Bill Worden.
